About Genital Herpes
Genital Herpes refers to lesions of the genital area classically associated with Herpes simplex virus, type II (HSV-2). While genital herpes cannot be cured medication can rapidly decrease the pain and discomfort associated with an outbreak and can shorten healing time as well.
Oral agents are currently being prescribed for genital herpes, including acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir. These medications suppress the symptoms and have been shown to speed the healing and resolution of symptoms.
Recent data suggest that increasing numbers of herpes labialis infections may be due to HSV-2 and up to half of the new cases of genital herpes may be due to HSV-1.
