| If the virus does become active gain, usually later in life, it causes shingles. Overall, approximately 20% of those who have had chickenpox as children develop shingles at some time in their lives. The CDC reports that between 600,000 and one million Americans are diagnosed with shingles each year.
Once activated, the virus travels along the path of a nerve to the skin's surface, where it causes shingles.
Doctors typically prescribe oral antiviral medications such as acyclovir (Zovirax), valacyclovir (Valtrex) or famciclovir (Famvir) to treat shingles — preferably beginning within 48 to 72 hours of the first sign of the shingles rash.
