Vaginitis

Vaginitis refers to vaginal discharge or itching related to three separate conditions; bacterial vaginosis (Gardnerella vaginalis infection), trich (Trichomonas vaginalis infection), and yeast (Candida albicans infection) infection.  Vaginitis is the most common gynecological indication accounting for over 10 million doctor visits each year in the US.

Nanoemulsions have in vitro activity against all three organisms responsible for vaginitis.  Unlike current therapies that require a different agent for each different infection, nanoemulsion treatment provides the opportunity to treat all these organisms with one product.  This reduces the need for a specific diagnosis and the chance of developing a secondary infection with an organism not covered by a given therapy (Table 1).

NanoBio scientists have already produced nanoemulsion formulations suitable for chronic vaginal use.  In vitro tests demonstrated that these formulations do not disrupt normal vaginal flora and have lower potential for vaginal cytotoxicity than current vaginal products (Fig 1).  NanoBio plans to refine these formulations to enhance activity against vaginitis causative pathogens as well as STD pathogens and optimize the characteristics for long term vaginal use.
