Acne

Development:

NanoBio's NanoStat™ acne treatment, NB-003, uniquely penetrates the skin and enters epidermal tissues targeting the pilosebaceous units (an oil producing gland connected to a hair follicle) resulting in effective delivery of the nanoemulsion droplets to the site of infection. These droplets disrupt the P. acnes and are cidal on contact.

Nanoemulsion droplets disrupt    P. acnes and are immediately cidal to the bacteria

In vitro studies on human cadaver skin confirm that nanoemulsions target the hair follicle pores and penetrate along the follicular duct and are; therefore, promising non-irritating carrier systems for pilosebaceous drug delivery.

This NanoStat product provides a four-prong synergistic combination treatment strategy that includes (1) control of inflammation, (2) opening or unclogging of the pores, (3) reduction of the causative bacteria levels and (4) enhancement of the topical bioavailability and effectiveness of other anti-acne agents.

Mechanism of Action

NanoStat Acne Treatment:

  • Has potent in vitro cidal activity against P. acnes, the organism associated with acne
  • Delivery is targeted to the acne producing area of the skin (pilosebaceous unit)
  • Supports enhanced bioavailability, and thus effectiveness, of other topical anti-acne agents
  • Phase I study will being July, 2009.  This study to include in vivo P. acnes reduction parameters

About Acne:

Nearly 17 million Americans suffer from acne, one of the most common of all skin diseases - effecting 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24. Acne continues into adulthood for 18% of the population, with 6% more females experiencing chronic outbreaks than males.

Acne develops when skin pores become blocked by sebum (oil). Sebum accumulates inside the pore and becomes infected with bacteria. When the infection remains under the skin surface, it develops into a whitehead. When the infection partly reaches the skin surface and changes color, it develops into a blackhead.

Numerous treatments for acne are available. These preparations can be effective in varying degrees, but none have been proven to be uniformly effective and without side effects.
